The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
