Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras Asserts Varoufakis Proved ‘Inappropriate’ for the role of Greek Finance Minister Amid Financial Meltdown

In a freshly published autobiography, called Ithaki, the ex- premier Alexis Tsipras does not hold back while he examines that chaotic period during Greece's economic turmoil.

An Unconventional Appointment

In the ex-PM's recollections, he selected that maverick economist Yanis Varoufakis to be his treasury head mainly because of the latter's global profile and his highly compelling abilities as a public orator.

“He was, actually, more like a celebrity rather than an economic expert,” stated Tsipras.

Conflicting Priorities

Tsipras suggests how his finance chief possessed a personal motives which included advancing Varoufakis's books as well as testing out his game theories on the nation instead of genuinely fighting for the country's economic stability.

He explained that those negotiations to prevent insolvency became “not just a method to secure improved terms for Greece. They were a test, a monumental chance to demonstrate the truth of Varoufakis's economic theories.”

Critical Talks

During rollercoaster discussions, Greece found itself dangerously close to exiting the eurozone.

On the line lay not only Greece's future but also those severe cutbacks demanded in exchange for bailout funds by international creditors.

Unsuccessful Alternatives

Attempts to find funds elsewhere, including a desperate appeal to Russia to buy Greek bonds, went unanswered.

Assisting the indebted country would be tantamount to throwing money into the garbage, the Russian leader is reputed to have told Tsipras during their meeting.

Referendum Followed by U-Turn

In July 2015, those excoriating conditions were subjected to a public vote, a move which plunged Europe into a deeper crisis of identity.

Even though the referendum was won decisively by those against austerity, Tsipras was forced but to ignore the result and negotiate a rescue deal with foreign lenders that proved to be more severe.

Final Straw

The ex-PM claimed that he started questioning Varoufakis quite early on.

“He was the face of negotiation, the figure who drew publicity, who graced the front pages of magazines globally … he gave the impression he relished his new role.”

When the minister outlined a contingency plan involving creating a parallel currency as well as distributing vouchers to pensioners, the leader knew that it was the end questioning Varoufakis: “Is this for real?”

Lasting Rebuke

Within the book, Tsipras asserts that Varoufakis had proved himself “unfit for an agreement that required intricate and sensitive handling.”

Tsipras also claimed how Varoufakis's aggressive style made him increasingly isolated among peers, put Greece at risk, and helped hawks who were pushing for Grexit.

This account of history has provoked anger along with shock among certain groups, whereas Varoufakis has kept a conspicuous quiet on the matter.
